ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) – The former police chief for a central Louisiana town has been arrested on multiple charges.

News outlets report 34-year-old Nate Ussery, who led the Ball Police Department, was arrested Thursday. According to his attorney, Adam Huddleston, Ussery turned himself into police after being indicted by a Rapides Parish grand jury. Authorities say he is currently free after posting $50,000 bond.

Ussery, of Pineville, faces charges of injuring public records, filing or maintaining false public records, malfeasance in office, payroll fraud and abuse of office.

Ussery, who was elected chief in 2014, resigned Feb. 2 amid rumors that he was under investigation. Ussery now works for a Urania-based construction company.

State police say the investigation remains “active and ongoing.”
